Pizza Man: DNS/DNF in every race, i.e. he always shows up, but he never sails.

Scorekeeper’s Comments

Week 6 (May 9), There were a couple wind shifts before the start of race one, which caused some last minute change of course. After the start signal, the wind kept going with only minor variations in strength or direction. Quite a change since last week. Some people thought it seemed like the summer conditions, but there were no lulls with no wind as is common in July and August. John P was determined to win the glass for the first quarter, got a good start in both races and stayed in the lead to the finish.

Week 5 (May 2), For the past three weeks in a row we have had lots of wind and wind shifts and gusts. Good practice for the NA's at Pinecrest. Five weeks down, one to go. John P appears to have a lead, but with throw outs, Art Lange is tied. What will happen next week? Come and see it live.

Week 4 (Apr 25), For two weeks in a row we have had perfect conditions. Perfect for Hurricane Gulch, that is. Plenty of gusts and wind shifts. John P and Art Lange took 1-2 and 2-1. The scoring without throwouts puts John P ahead. If 3 races are thrown out, they are equal. Further back in the fleet, John G is starting to realize that if he wants to break the tie with Pizza Man, he will actually have to sail. In that case, I hope Pizza Man can write the finishing places.

As we were getting ready to leave, we had a visit by an upset Park Ranger. The water is way down leaving a large area between the end of the pavement and the water. Just the same, he wants to enforce the sign that says only one car at a time. See you next week.

Week 3 (Apr 18), This week saw swirling winds, a perfect night for Hurricane Gulch. Art Lange did a great job of being skillful or lucky in picking which wind shifts on which to tack and which shifts to sail through and earned his first bullets of the season. With John and Paul also having two first places, the top three places are really tight.

Week 2 (Apr 11), The day started with rain. I had to put on my foul weather gear to load the boat before going to work. Despite some ominous clouds, the rain stopped long before time for sailing. The water level in the reservoir was several feet lower than last week. The dock is more onshore than in the water. The good news is that there was wind, at times enough to sit on the rail. It was very shifty. Many huge shifts in direction. Several times boats could tack just by putting the sail on the other side without changing course. Sometimes the wind just quit, leaving boats to drift while the skippers guessed which direction it would come from.

In the first race, Paul got a good start and kept on going. In the second race every boat had a turn being in the lead. Then the wind would stop, shift direction or just give a lift to the other boats. In the end, John P took the bullet.

Week 1 (Apr 4), The opening of the 2007 season at Stevens Creek had conditions that matched where we left off in the fall. The breeze was never strong enough to call it "wind." A couple times it stopped altogether and then filled in from a different direction. The water level was also low, but no islands. The water level might be explained by lack of winter rain, or a deliberate attempt to prevent more erosion of the pavement near the launch ramp. There were recently installed barricades reducing the width to one car at a time.

John P. celebrated his 50th birthday by taking a 1st and a 2nd to finish the day leading the series. He had been practicing at the mid-winters and also took 3rd place in the Big Dinghy Regatta on Saturday at Richmond YC. John will need to keep sailing hard to claim the Q1 glass; Art Lange and Paul Z are tied with 5 points. Seven boats raced for the evening, but only six in each race.
