Scorekeeper’s Comments

Week 1 (Jun 29), Mountain View. Moderate winds, not too strong. Nice sailing. At the finish of race #1, Malcolm's plug in the bottom of his carbon mast blew apart. He dropped his sail and was able to get back home with little damage (deck a little bent). Peter Auby sailed a borrowed boat (from Gordie Nash); all carbon, yellow racing machine.

Week 2 (Jul 6), It doesn’t get any better than this. After a number of weeks away the reservoir welcomed us back with classic conditions. Light to moderate breezes blew all night shifting from one side of the dam to the other. The first race was a classic Art and Art light air duel with Art Lange pulling ahead at the end. Bear in mind that Art Lewis discovered a leak along side his centerboard trunk moments before the start and strategically applied some duct tape in order to stay afloat for the race – what composure to come back and race that well under those conditions. The fun race was so much so, we had another, then we went around twice. We almost blew our return to reservoir by staying on the water after sunset. It was just too nice to stop. A ranger was watching us, but she let us have our fun.

Week 3 (Jul 13), Picture perfect conditions again this week… we’re getting spoiled. Light breezes over the dam all night. First race went to the mark further left. The second to the mark on the right. Lange and Pacholski churned up the water with a non-stop tacking duel in the second race. The Professor showed why he’s the NA champ with countless flawless roll-tacks getting him the top spot.

Week 4 (Jul 20), Paul Tara made it back to the reservoir for the first time this quarter after helping at the Stockton sailing camp. The reservoir gave us a hat-trick – the third wonderful, warm evening of steady light to very light winds. Most of the time the wind was coming straight down from the dam with a little more horsepower on the east side of the reservoir. The scorer with the funny Polish name obviously like the conditions and added two bullets in his quest for the 3rd quarter glass.

Week 5 (Jul 27), The reservoir treated us to excellent light to moderate winds this week. The first race featured crisp shifts as the fleet raced to the east end of the dam. The shifts mellowed out in the second race, but no drifting tonight. Paul Tara acclimates quickly. After returning to the dam for the first time in a while last week, he fought for the lead all first race only to be overtaken by Art Lange in the end. Paul went on to lead the entire second race.ÊPaul Zander had an excellent first race finishing a high third.

Week 6 (Aug 3), Just one more spectacular evening on the reservoir. Spunky winds from the right side of the dam all evening with some snappy shifts to keep things interesting. With Art Lewis and Paul Zander breathing down his neck all evening John P. pulled off two bullets to finish Q3. Third quarter ends with a tie between our NA champ Art Lange and your humble scorer John P. with 14 points each, after throw outs.ÊAs the Professor already earned his glass in Q2, John gets the Q3 glass.ÊThose glasses do make the scotch taste better you know. See you all out there next week to kick off Q4 – go for the glass!
