Week 1 (April 7), Notes from the scorekeeper: The reservoir treated us to a typical shifty and light wind evening. It was great. Ed Patterson rejoined the fleet after a year’s absence. Welcome back Ed. Graham Skinner joined the fleet Wednesday - welcome. When Graham took on a little water (like 12 inches) Dan did an amazing job of dumping 95% of the water out of Graham’s older boat while at sea. Dan, I’m sticking close to you during the Bullship, just in case.
The webmaster responds: Welcome back, Graham. Some of us are old enough to remember when you used to sail with us regularly. You said it had only been 2 or 3 years, but a quick check of the results archive (back to 2000) finds no sign of you, so maybe 5 years is closer. And as for dumping the water out of your boat, what I did was just a poor imitation of what I’ve seen Art Lange and Terry Schmidt do before, for me and others.
Week 2 (April 14), The scorekeeper was on vacation this week, so the webmaster speaks: 7 of us showed up, and we all stayed in our boats. The wind was generally from the south, but up and down, and very shifty. Some of us got on the rail a couple times, but never for very long. Max was top dog for the day, but Greg really showed his stuff in race 2. With 4 races so far, we have 4 different winners, and very close scoring for the series.
Week 3 (April 21), The scorekeeper was AWOL once again, so the webmaster reports: Dave Goechel and Sam (sorry, I missed his last name) showed up for the first time this season, making a whopping 10 boats for the night, and 12 entered in the series so far. The breeze was similar to last week, once again sending us up the treacherous Hurricane Gulch (especially treacherous for me, I’m sad to say). If there was any doubt before about who’s the boss, Max laid it to rest with a pair of bullets, giving himself a nice 14th birthday present. (Happy birthday Max!) The first race was especially hard fought, with the lead traded back and forth among at least 3 boats, and a virtual photo finish between Max & Art Lange. The T-shirt says "Old age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill," but not this time.
Week 4 (April 28), Moderate relaxing to light breezes. Nine boats. Max is still in command for the quarter, with dazzling 1 and 2 finishes. Thanks to Art Lewis for keeping Max honest in the second race and scoring a #1.
Week 5 (Cinco de Mayo), It was a beautiful night on the reservoir, with good winds, 8 boats, and remarkably consistent racing. Max is unstoppable.
Week 6 (May 12), With all of eleven points, half that of the nearest competitor, Max takes honors for Q1. Nicely done Max! Mark set in the gulch last night. Nice wind to start, turning into a drifter by the end of the second race. Second start had to be held up because the wind would not come from one side of the start line or the other for several minutes.ĘGood seeing Paul Tara and Patrick, who joined us for the first time this season.
